In the early 1980s, Christy O’Connor Jnr. and his family moved to live in the parish of Gort. The people of the area are pleased and proud that the considerable upturn in Christy’s golfing career happily coincided with his arrival in South Galway. He was made an Honorary Life Member of the Club in 1985 following his breaking of Henry Cotton’s 50 year old course record at Sandwich in the British Open where he finished third to Sandy Lyle. The links he has forged with the Gort Golf Club are strong indeed, as we as evidenced when some 20 members of the golf club travelled to the Belfry to witness his great triumph over Fred Couples in the 1989 Ryder Cup.
Christy designed his first project in 1986, and since then he has become one of the most respected and leading golf course architects in the industry. With well over thirty projects throughout Europe, his talent and expertise are now being sought on an international level.
With close to forty years playing professionally on tour, the two time Senior British Open Champion, has had the opportunity of competing on some of the greatest golf courses in the world. Working closely with his team, Christy aims to create something seamlessly with nature whilst bearing in mind the playing skills of golfers of all levels. What sets Christy apart from other signature designers is his level of enthusiasm and dedication to each project. Christy will be onsite from inception to finish ensuring that he creates a golf course that both he and his clients can be proud of.
Members of Gort Golf Club are very proud with Christy O’Connor Jnr’s design at Castlequarter.
